Since the digital billboard program was initiated by FBI in 2007 nationwide, a total of 39 suspects have been captured based on tips from the public who have seen digital billboards. The arrest of the East Coast Rapist occurred less than one week after the police drawing of the suspect was posted on about 100 billboards in a digital dragnet, in Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, Rhode Island. It occurred after a detailed tip from the public, which helped to identify and arrest the suspect. It is believed that this rapist was responsible for up to 17 rapes over a 14 year period.
